Cyclic Ring Shear Apparatus

BORMHEAD TYPE - DRAINED

This high-end cyclic ring shear test device features a robust and stiff construction combined with high-quality mechanical and electronic components, determining the drained residual strength of continuously sheared soils.

It includes two separate advanced cyclic force actuators which, in combination with other components, produce repeatable test results. The excellent quality makes it suitable for research as well as standard test applications. The vertical and torsional loads are generated by independent and separate electromechanical force actuators, allowing for independent control of the normal axis and shear axis in displacement (strain or velocity) mode, as well as load control.

The wide column spacing enables the accommodation of large shear boxes with sample sizes up to 200 mm O.D. and 150 mm I.D. The frame has high stiffness to reduce deflection and vibrations, which could influence the accuracy of measurements during repeated loading tests.

The advantage of the ring shear device over other Shear testing devices, such as the direct shear test, is its ability to accommodate very long and almost unlimited shear displacement (continuous shear) while maintaining a constant area throughout the whole test.
