Rock Combined Triaxial and Direct Shear Apparatus

The combined modular rock direct shear and triaxial test system is designed to determine the shear strength of intact, joint rock or concrete samples. The frame is a high stiff frame which consists of 4 stiff columns and two actuators for vertical force and shear force, combined in a special configuration to avoid friction and torque to determine the shear strength and creep properties of rock samples, concrete, as well as any solid material.

The device is suitable for cylindrical, prismatic or irregular shaped pieces of solid or discontinuous rock cores. The system uses two independent servo-hydraulic actuators to apply axial and shear load to samples with highest accuracy possible. This device allows for the testing of rock samples under both shear and triaxial loading conditions.

This combination lowers the total cost of the system compared to purchasing two separate devices—one for triaxial tests and the other for direct shear tests. There is no limit for modularity of this system.

The combined triaxial/direct shear device is a modular, user-friendly system that can be upgraded with additional hardware to perform a variety of tests, including:

  • Triaxial Cell: For standard triaxial testing on rock samples.
  • Permeability Tests: Conduct permeability testing on rock samples using single or double pressure intensifiers, up to 200 MPa, in both steady-state or unsteady-state conditions.
  • Ultrasonic Velocity Measurement: To measure the velocity of ultrasonic waves through the rock sample.
  • Acoustic Emission Test (3D): For monitoring and analyzing the acoustic emissions from the rock during testing.
  • Hydraulic Fracturing Test: To perform hydraulic fracturing on intact specimens.
  • Creep Test: For assessing the long-term parameters of rock samples under constant load, useful for analyzing the stability of structures such as underground constructions.
