Rock Uniaxial (Unconfined Compression) Testing System

This uniaxial rock testing system is designed and manufactured to perform tests according to ASTM standards and suggested ISRM methods. The system includes a hydraulic loading frame with power pack and applies increasing load at a constant rate of stress to test various materials from soft rock (e.g. sandstone) to high-strength brittle rock or building materials.

The compressive strength is probably the most widely used and quoted rock-engineering parameter. Under uniaxial load conditions the maximum stress that the rock sample can sustain is referred to as uniaxial compressive strength.

The most useful description of the mechanical behaviour of intact rock is the complete stress–strain curve of the compressive strength test. This curve can be used to determine mechanical parameters as well as uniaxial compression strength, Young modulus, Poisson’s ratio and post failure behaviour. This modular system can be configured with different load ranges, load frames and test jigs for different specimen diameters.

The system can be upgraded to a standard rock triaxial testing system using a Hoek cell or triaxial cell with different specimen sizes. Triaxial cells can be standard high, pressure cells or a high pressure/high temperature version.

  • Ultrasonic velocity measuring
  • Environmental temperature chamber to conduct uniaxial tests under temperature controlled conditions
  • Creep tests on rock samples subjected to constant load. This helps determine the long-term parameters of the samples for structure stability analysis (e.g. underground constructions).

GEOsys software for user defined free programmable test standard procedures and complex test sequences by structured Windows operations on a graphic user interface. Through a series of menus, this provides quick access to all the controls needed for test set ups and follows standard test sequences. The software is able to create an unlimited number of test stages with interactive and calculated parameters for closed-loop, real-time control. An unlimited number of control and measuring channels can be simultaneously controlled.

  • It is also possible to accept different modules for extra tests
  • Individually configurable data acquisition (collection rate, parameter setting, recording type e.g. ASCII)
  • Interactive alteration of test parameters for all channels or test devices during the test
  • Various operator platforms for different users of the system parameter settings, e.g. configuration, PID parameters, transducer configuration, ranges plausibility.
